R&andB Of The 90's
This a collection of some of the top ten R&B songs of the 90's higlighting some of the lyrics and artists however not detailing their bio's, many of us have found them to be a moment in time when romance was still alive and making love was well, just that making love. It wasn't about shooting, raping or killing, men were gentleman and everyone dressed exquisitely when going out on the town, certainly not in baggie pants and t-shirts to impress the ladies. The ladies wore high heels and fashionable dresses and of course we were just that ,ladies. Curtis Mayfield said it in the 70's with his song, "People Get Ready" it begins like this, "People get Ready, there's a train a comin', you don't need no baggage, you just get on board.... you see change has come and the world has changed but our memories will be everlasting.
"I'll Give All My Love To You"
Ooh Baby, give it to me now, girl
Can't nobody give it out
For me and you, yeah girl
I wanna pull down the shades and the lights
Keith Sweat didn't move much but he certainly knew how to woo the ladies and every man was envious of the man who had no moves. Not only was it was a tantalizing and teasing song, it was tastefully naughty.
"My,My,My"
My,My,My,
My,My,My you sure look sweet tonight,
Put on your red dress , sleep on those high heels,
My,My,My was right Johnny Gill appeared to be competing with Keith Sweat as the radio stations and the DJ's always played these back to back. Honestly how many of us owned a red dress, just because Johnny Gill was singing about it?
" Body and Soul"
What have you done to me,
I can't eat, I cannot sleep
and I am not the same anymore...
Anita Baker said it , as yes there was heartbreak in the 90's as well but all of us managed to get through it, simply by a song. she was and still is one of the best artists of all time.
"Vision of Love"
Treated me kind sweet destiny,
carried me through desperation...
Mariah went through her changes in the 90's but rose to the occassion and is still going strong, her earlier music is far better then what she is recording now however with time comes change and she is still going strong as she is still one of my favorite artists of all time
"One Moment in Time"
Each Day I live, I want to be
A Day to give the best of me,
I'm only one but not alone,...
Sitting with a bunch of friends, drinking wine and talking about life , this song as always been a favorite and I find myself turning it up and singing to it. I want it all and so many of us said the same thing in the 90's how many of us have it all? Whitney is and always will be artist with so much and although she has had her ups and downs , she is still a star.
"Bump and Grind"
My mind is telling me no,
but my body, my body is telling me yes,
R.Kelly an amazing artist golds and platinums line his home an artist that keeps on writing and making hits, he was the talk of the town in the 90's and I had the honor of meeting the up and coming artist at the time. What a humble and warm man and to think his talent made him who he is today.
BOYZ II Men , Barry White, Luther Vandross, TLC, Bone-Thugs and Harmony, Babyface, there are so many I cannot name all of them. The 90's a time when men were men and ladies were ladies, romance and love were in the air and We all wanted to be given "Just one moment in time".

Tony- Those are songs you're not supposed to tell any of your homeboys about

there's no defense for the crime committed
I love been taken back to time and that is exactly what you have done. i love this hub but wish you had included my favourite artist-Chris de Burgh... please write about him or do you want me to.
Alright, i am looking forward to this hub. It would be great to read about my favourite artist from you because you are a great hubber. Thanks
The song was called "STAN " It came out at the end of the decade of the 90s,It was pretty Interesting .Dido was sampled on It of all people !
So true. They don't make music like that anymore. Don't you miss Luther?
wow! I cannot beleive I missed this hub before. I absolutely love this!
Another cool hub. HOWEVER, I must point out that I have just read two of your hubs and both promised one thing a list and then halfway through it seems it was just..."I'm bored, move on and PUBLISH!
Don't get me wrong I like your style but I think if you nurture your subjects, you will probly find it helps the overall quality of the hub.
Back on subject...I will go with "Rub You The Right Way" for JGill
Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder) by MAXWELL is a glaring omission I think
and I am would also add Virtual Insanity - Jamiroquai,
You Gotta Be by Des'ree is another that comes to mind.
Great topic, cool hub.
I love the music from the nineties and you listed a few good ones I forgot about. However, I am a product of Motown and Stix, and Capitol Records, and the sound of Elvis, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, KISS, Charlie Daniels Band, BB King, and well...you get the picture (so I am old - big deal!) (lol)
Thanks for sharing :-)
My mom always listened to R&B on Sundays all during my childhood. Boys 2 Men was one she always loved. Looking forward to more from you.
Sweet! Thanks for the memories...
I got goosebumps remembering back to the 90's and the songs you mentioned. I loved them all- yes you do need to mention Jodeci and maybe even Bell, Biv, Devoe. I even made a pack with my best friend at the time (in high school) that our future husbands had to sing "I'll Give All My Love to You" to us before we would marry them. Hmmm....that one didn't turn out. My husband doesn't sing and I love him enough to not make him. H-Town is good too-"Lick You Up" and "Knocking Da Boots"!
I miss those days when there was "making out"/foreplay.
Kids happen! Routine happens! I remember putting in a Jodeci (casette) tape and making out the whole time. Music, especially the R&B you mentioned in this hub, really created the mood. Maybe it's just me, but since the 90's not many good R&B/mood/soul music has been made. It's like rap is rap now, but where's R&B? I grew up listening to Smoky Robinson and others, but I mostly remember him and his very smoothe voice and music- he's a classic.
You inspired me to write a hub- hopefully I can finish it this week. You got me thinking back to the music I grew up on. THANKS!
Thank you very much for this hub! It's really very useful.. I appreciate it very much and will follow your advice!
Ahhh...the good ol' days...I miss Aaliyah!
i love your lens, I really don't have favorites in particular but I love listening to music, specially R&B songs.
AEvans, we share the same appreciation of great music!
Your hubs are super!
I have to give a shout out for Boyz to Men. My family is from Philly so I must represent every chance I get.
I enjoyed the hub!
Great read--We all love Mariah !,
I just started listening to this kind of R&B im a 17 year old and im already inlove with the oldies stuff, thanks for the post. much appreciated.
I love One Moment in Time! Great choices!
Beautiful Hub. I like the way you wrote the first few Lyrics of the songs.
I really like Mariah Carey and she's still going strong. I know the others but Mariah is my favourite.
Regards. :)
This was when music was music and you could feel the artists feelings in their songs. Not this regurgitated swill they peddle in the industry today. I listen to very little of the new stuff. But anything 99 on back I bump (means play for the ebonically challenged lol) Cool hub; it took me back ~hugs~
