In the past 20 years there appears to be a new breed of paparazzi, they are aggressive, arrogant, and obsessed with providing information about a well known celebrity. From digging through garbage cans to stopping traffic a person has to wonder if living the lifestyle of the rich and famous is really worth it.
When Princess Diana passed away in 1997 , many observed what the paparazzi could do but were lead to believe it was possibly an isolated incident. Princess Diana was always cordial to the paparazzi posing for the cameras, answering questions so why the chase?
Move ahead thirteen years and it appears they are getting progressively worse. Hiding behind garbage cans just to get a glimpse. Following them through the airports only to add stress to their environment or blocking there vehicles until they get a shot.
When they pick up there children from daycare, they either have to have bodyguards or request aide from the police department just to get there children home. Does this make any sense?
There are those who are star struck and those like myself who could careless when it came to the type of toilet paper they used or wondering what there children looked like. If a parent wishes to share there children publicly then they should not be bullied, shoved, or followed at high speeds just to get a snapshot if an actor/.actresses children.
They were given a gift to act,sing, dance or make us laugh. Everyone has some type of God given talent. There are those who excel in the craft of building or banking,others excel in writing, directing traffic or protecting our community. We enjoy there talent and we pay them to perform for us but they are people who are entitled to privacy, respect, and peace just like anyone else.
We appreciate them but it does not mean that when we see them in a public place we should interrupt there day. Just like us they need there space and should not live in fear being concerned about how they are going to plan a dinner for two and wondering how they are going to escape the world of the paparazzi or stalkers for that matter.
Hollywood paparazzi and the cost of fame has became stressful for many stars, we are finding that they are taken prescribed drugs just to cope with the world outside of theirs. Michael Jackson, Anna-Nicole Smith were good examples of what happens when the world does not leave them alone.
Paparazzi and the media were cruel to both Michael Jackson and Anna-Nicole Smith. While the camera was snapping, the media was painting horrific pictures of their drug addiction. Do you blame them for being hooked? We expect them to look perfect, act perfect and smile for the camera. Who are we to tell them what to do? How would the paparazzi, the media and all of us feel if the shoe were on the other foot? What if someone was chasing us just to get a glimpse of our children or to see if our hair was done or not? Would fear and panic run through our veins?
They are only people who make more money then the average Joe, they put there pants on the same way as we do, tie there shoes, brush there teeth and you can bet they watch many of the same movies or listen to similar music.
Many of us do not blame them for punching someone in the nose or shoving a camera out of the way. They are not puppets. The Hollywood paparazzi and the cost of fame is not worth another person's life. We are not desperate to see that Demi Moore has put on a few pounds or that Ashton Kirschner purchased a new vehicle. Are we really that concerned about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt arguing? Any relationship has there indifference, so why is it our business?
Being a star has its price but a law needs to be passed in the United States that does not allow them to stalk, harass or chase them at high speeds. Something needs to be done before someone gets hurt again and it costs someone there life. All due to trying to get a snapshot of a person who only wishes to have a little privacy. If the paparazzi were being stalked by people one would wonder how they would feel.

Shalini Kagal: It is nuts and here in the U.S. it is getting worse, I wonder if we began to snap photos of the paparazzi and follow them around what would they do? Maybe they would get a hint. :)
I couldn't agree more, today the paparazzi in the media has become so hard core that it is now dangerous to be famous. Back in the time of Classic Hollywood the photographers new their place and showed respect. Sad to see how the world has changed so much.

I totally agree with this. They (the paparazzi) seem to be completely out of control. They're like a pack of animals. It's really disgusting.

I completely agree. To me, it is sad to see that since Princess Diana's death 13 years ago, the paparazzi have learned nothing and in fact, have gotten even worse pursuing their "prey". Ridiculous!
This is the reason, if I had to choose, I'd prefer to be rich person from the dot.com business or from an insanely popular invention, no in-your-face photo freaks 24 hours a day.
And it has gotten worse if there was a law that limited the prices received from TMZ, the Enquirer and other junk papers pay, then less paparazzis will be there taking snapshots when you're on a caribbean vacation and enjoying the vacation.
There should be a law which states that any photo taken by these clowns about any person famous or not, they need a swarn signed document giving permission to release said photo. This law should be inforced by a $50,000.00 fine for both the photo taker and the one publishing it and a retraction.
Maybe this would curtail this trash for sticking their noses into peoples privacy, even if they are a celebrity or infamous.
I do not like having my picture taken. Over the past 25-30 years you will not find one photo of me and prior to that maybe one or two that I am aware of.

ocbill: I agree there should be a law limiting the prices and there should also be a law with how many feet they need to be from them in order to take pictures. They should not be allowed to block there vehicles or they should have to face some time in jail. :)

I recognize there is too much money to be lost if there isn't a new photo of Britney Spears or the kids in the Twilight movies, but there should be limits established. The intrusion into their lives has especially hurt child stars like the Olsen twins, or Britney Spears and her sister. It is sad to watch them disintegrate in front of our eyes as the pressure gets to them. When a star lashes out, then the photographer sues THEM! It is insane.
I agree that there should be a way to limit how much a person's image can be used for another's personal gain without their consent, but I can't imagine how to implement that. It is truly a problem.

As you said, in reality it's just a job. But Hollywood has nothing to do with reality. It's the 'star factory' that's at fault but actors are more than happy to comply initially. Stars are made off the movie/music lot by publicity. It starts with an article here and there until it 'catches' the public's interest and voila. The actor benefits by commanding more money but unfortunately, when it works and the public responds by wanting more, things get out of hand. I'm not sure at what point in a person's acting career they cease to have the same rights as everyone else but it might be worth exploring and changing the law. Just because a ball game is televised or a movie is released shouldn't mean those involved relinquish their basic freedoms. It's another case of money overruling constitutional rights.
A Evans, Nice informative hub! I think the paparazzi should remember that stars are people too! Yes! It is a cost for fame but I think they should have some privacy boundaries impressed upon them! Especially since they thrive on spreading bad news and their concerns is about the ratings and really not the star!

Hum, what to do what to do, the stars beg for it when out of the spot light and long for it once gone. I do feel there should be some human rights considered in terms of stalking, entering a persons personal space (four foot radius) etc. Great read thanks :)
Mike Licketig: Soemthing has to be done, we here about the complaints all of the time about the paparazzi but something needs to be established before another person truly loses there life at the hands of the inconsiderate. :)
SilverGenes: I agree with you money certainly does rule over there constitutional rights. Being in the public eye is one thing, but when they ask for privacy the rules should be followed.

It's an awful thing to be harrassed the way that the 'rich and beautiful' are by the paparazzi. Some people say that the stars ask for this attention because of their job and that they should just shut up and live with it. I think there needs to be some kind of rein on what lengths they can go to to get a story.
Avans, This is a very interesting hub and I think the Paparazzi have gotten out of hand causing wrecks, standing on house tops or in trees with long range cameras to try and catch a picture of a nude star. It is disgusting and surpasses the freedom of speech. I think thy ought to have to stay a certain distance away at the very least.
KoffeeKlatchgals: I have heard about that to but the paparazzi are going to the extreme as both you and I know. They need to give them some breathing room and respect. It is one thing to capture there story but another when they are asking for privacy. :)

There needs to be laws about how far the paps can go, ie: a limit to how close they can get, no photos of private holidays/ceremonies if requested (some celebs want these taken), no photos of kids unless parents allow them and generally the paps need to use some common sense, how would they like their privacy compromised ALL the time??? Fully Agree ... and they play a major role in the celebrity buzz, rumors and stuff like this, which is really garbage for the ordinary audience .. why should I care if this singer is dating that girl, or this actress hates this another actress ... However, though, the audience should be blamed too, cause if there is no audience for such stuff, the paparazzi would vansih at the end!
MPG Narratives: That is my question exactly! Maybe a handful of people can turn the tables and begin to puruse them and maybe then they would stop and give them space and respect. :)

Even if a dog of a famous actor sneezes then it becomes a news. Celebrity rumors, link up break ups...but at end of da day, does a common even bother what brad pitt is interested in. Anyways a thought provoking and insightful hub. Keep up the good work

AEvans: What a great idea for a hub! I couldn't even imagine living a celebrity papparazi life for one day. I was just watching a Britney Spears special the other day, and felt so terrible for her. They really need to respect their privacy. Awesome hub, loved it! :)
MaryRenee: They should respect a stars privacy, but for some reason they become like madmen and women trying to get a story. It gets to the point that you are concerned about the safety of them. They should back off a little and give some space, I couldn't imagine the type of stress either.
There was a hair show I had been in when I was in my 20's everything moved so quickly, cameras, backstage etc. I was glad when it was over but occassionally I would run into people who would say, " hey you were the girl in the hair show." They would ask for tips etc. or even pics but it was nothing compared to what they live each day.
Being that my hubs are so popular I can relate to the press following me around all of the time. :)

I think the "reporters" who chased after Princess Diana, were sociopaths who belong in jail, because as far as I'm concerned, those paparazzi killed her and her boyfriend.

I think the issue is crystal clear! The paps are invading the privacy of these celebs. Of course the fans want a little of the inside story of their stars.... I agree it is so dangerous to be a celebrity today because the more famous you are the more risks paparazzi go to take pictures. From what I understand they get paid huge amounts of money for those pictures and that motivates the photographers to be so aggressive.

celebritie: There isn't any amount of money that a person should take when it comes to risking a stars life for a pic. They need to walk in a celebrities shoes and see what it feels like to be stalked, harassed, followed or even tapped. If people would quit purchasing the gossip magazines that create stories built on lies, life would be much easier. Laws really need to be passed. :)
Well i think it's pathetic the way the paparazzi uses people information, photos, blogs, backrounds, etc just so they can hypen up their pay and people who enjoy this kinda stuff. It should be limited i do agree to that. Their have been people of the press changing information around on people to either embarrass them, humiliate, or to hurt peole for others with the reward of money and other rediculous things. The system need to trust certain people handling others information. Alot of people who have been interviewed by the press and put themselves out there but what about the people who dont even have a clue on why are they on the front page of a newspaper or the magazine with some rediculous head title. They should limit those powers with the press. If your going to humiliate someone do it to someone who has damaged or scarred someone for life then send them to jail. Not those who are trying to be something in this world. Thats my piont of view on this.

It's sad what happens and yet it seems to be a vicious circle. The paparazzi go after the tiniest bit of news simply because they know that it will boost their readership/viewership :(
