Defining Poetry
Before you begin to name certain types of poetry, you must first define poetry so that the person reading it clearly understands what the meaning is. I personally love poetry and not only do I read it , I often pick up a pen and write it. Poetry expresses different types of emotion and is a piece of literature written by a poet in either meter or verse. You say to yourself what is a meter or verse? My definition will explain to you the meaning of what we are discussing.
A "Meter" is defined as an exact arangement of syllables arranged in repeated patterns called feet within a line. These are regular rhythms of language in which the accents occur at equal intervals in time. Each meter that is repeated is called a foot.
A "Verse" is simply a single line of metrical poetry.

Structure of Poetry
Poetry has a structure which is used in poem verses and consists of elements which include, couplet, strophe and stanza. Poets combine language and structure to create there masterpiece.
5 Types of Poetry
Although there are many types of Poetry and there are a vast amount of writers of poetry , the list I am about to give does not even touch the many types that are out there. This is only a small compilation and are my five favorites that I have enjoyed through the years.
Limericks: Limericks are short humorous poems that always consist of 5 lines. "Edward Lear" a famous Limerick writer was well known for some of these. If you choose to read some of his humor my recommendation is www.limericks.com as there you will get your belly full with his writings.
Romanticism: John Keats and Lord Byron two of my favorites wrote this type of poetry in the early 18th and 19th centuries. Absolutely beautiful and thought through as these gentleman were apparently a ladies' man of there time. On the internet you will find there biographies as well as some of there most famous writings. www.john-keats.com and for the famous Lord Byron you can go to www.pronto.com if you wish to read a romantic verse or two.
Rhymes: Rhymes are a type of poem which has repetition of the same similiar sounds for example, "Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall," Humpty Dumpty had a great fall" . This technique is simple and has been used in many nursery rhymes throughout the centuries.
ABC Poems: An ABC Poem has a series of lines that create a mood, picture or feeling, the lines are made up of the words that begin with the alphabet. First Line" A" second Line "B" etc. they are easy to write and compose and they can consist of an array of feelings and emotions.
Sonnets: Sonnets are lyric poems that are 14 lines long falling into there coordinated quatrains and a concluding couplet at which all who loves poetry is quite familiar with Shakespeare and his writings.

Nice Info AEvans, I love rhymes too!
Nice explanation about the types of poetry. I also write poems with rhymes. Thumbs up for a good hub.
I love that so many people on Hub Pages are advocates of poetry. I was just reading John Keats the other day actually :) To Emma is one of the greatest romantic poems.
I LOVE POEMS
FRIEND IS ASERACET NO ONE CAN KEEP
I NEED THIS SIGHT TO TEACH APPRECIATION OF POETRY
Thanks for this AEvans - look forward to reading one of your poems!....cheers
I've been writing poetry for many years. I started writing to my girlfriend and then to others. I've got a book coming out in about a month. Great site.
Well AEvans, I don't usually like poetry. I can't rhythm even if I tried and most of the time, reading a poem is like solving a riddle. Well since I'm not a problem solver I'm usually left out of the loop. But I very much appreciated the direction and angle this hub took on. I understand the ways and means of something far better than determining it's potential outcome. Thanks for shedding new light on poetry for this not so intellectual poet.
Concise, and informative - I reckon that is just what's needed when doing an introduction to this topic, as most people I've met run for the door when the idea of discussing poetry turns up - if indeed it ever does. You are clearly an undying romantic. Rock on romantics!
i've been writing since i was in middle school. love the rhymes, the sonnets....my favorite poem has to be poe's "the raven"
This hub-page challenges me, it is like you are speaking another language I need to learn:) I love the picture of the glasses, it is so cool how the one lense forms the heart...reflecting of your love of poetry:)
Very interesting article - I learned a few things about poetry...
I love reading and writing. Poetry is my all time favorite. I was occasionally writing since I was in middle school but of course not in English. I am an ESL writer and trying to write poetry in English in HP as I found that there are a lot of good writers as well as readers here who might encourage me and help me in enhancing my writing skill. I found a lot of vital information in this hub which might help an ESL writer like me. Thank you very much AEvans for sharing this.
Hello there J
I just sent you an email to see if you could solve a poetry issue with my work. Thanks for sharing this hub, it has gone someway to explaining to me what I have been doing lately (I think) lol. Take care.
That is a very nice definition of poetry and would be a good reference for those who are starting to write poetry.
I hope all is well with you.
Thank you,
