Revealing The Other Side Of Me On HubPages: How A New Hubber Should Be Treated
61
Lesson Learned
Revealing the other side of me on Hub Pages has got to be one of the most complicated reveals that a person can do. Spending 15 months commenting, following, interacting in the forums and writing has taught me lessons on Hub Pages. There are hubbers who are inspirational, full of comedy, will push you to continue your writing and those that just drop into to say hello. There are those who will turn the other cheek when you are a new hubber, hoping for many to join there fan club, but in turn they do not acknowledge your mere existence.
Most of my traffic was from outside sources mainly from Google and Bing. A handful was from the people on Hub Pages who chose to follow me and press me to write more. A few hubbers knew of this experiment and were sworn to secrecy, never revealing what was transpiring. Others did not have a clue what was really going on, the only thing they knew was that I was someone they enjoyed following.
Lessons learned on Hub Pages can be hard and they can also provide you with a look into a new hubbers world. We can tell a new hubber to interact but are we committed to guiding them? We can tell them to comment on other hubbers work, but are we also reading the words that they write? We can tell them to follow other hubbers , but are other hubbers really following them back? How many aspiring writers have given up and gone somewhere else because they have been treated poorly by their own peers?
IN 15 months I was on a very long journey of many lessons as an established hubber with Hub Pages; however no matter what I tried as a new hubber on Hub Pages with a second account the fish were just not biting. There were many new hubbers who followed me that appeared to be separated from the rest of the group. In turn I followed them back and found that they were profound writers' with words to say. They chose to stay away from the forums and write about life, religion, making money, tributes and how-to's . They are some of the best hubbers I have seen on Hub Pages this year. Although I cannot name all 111 of my followers on my other account, what I can say is they are what Hub Pages is about.
Revealing the other side of me on Hub Pages is given those an opportunity to be heard and seen and even though I only wrote 7 hubs on that account I was able to see a new person struggling to get noticed. Why does it have to be so complicated? We are a unique community so there isn't any reason for the struggle. If anyone runs across a new hubber, embrace them. If they ask for you to mentor them do it. If you find they forgot to use spellcheck don't complain about there work, let them know what they can do to improve it. All of us were new to Hub Pages and just because we have been here for awhile does not mean we should not forget our manners. If you find a hub to be offensive, e-mail them and remind them of TOS. If you are flagging something do not go around and brag about it, be an adult and respect the privacy of another. If you are upset with Hub Pages, saying negative things is not necessary all of us get upset at one time or another but instead of being hell bent on letting the world know how you feel, turn it into a positive by remembering why you became a part of the community.
Being a new person was hard work I read , took the bad with the good, had hubbers tell me why Hub Pages was not a great site but yet they continued to write. Does any of that make any sense when a person is new on Hub Pages? Feeling like a duck out of water every-time I wrote was stressful.
What I have learned through this experience is , when a person is new be by there side.. When they e-mail you a question, do not ignore it. Instead of bashing them for becoming involved with the community , respect that they have a fresh opinion. No matter how large your following grows take sometime to stop by and say hello.
To the hubbers who followed me under WhiteOrchids I thank you for being a mentor, making me laugh, making me cry and for reading every little hub that I wrote. Ehern33 for making laugh with his hub, What a way to make a living. I was in stitches when I read that hub it was hilarious or ezzy1512 and his hub Choosing a Stockbroker. Stephensaldana for his knowledge based hubs which are amazing or even Coolmon2009 for her wonderful biographies and Island getaways and Stephane86 for being a beacon of light to new hubbers always supportive and very responsive.
To all of the rest. You are what makes Hub Pages and I hope that all of you continue to strive for what you believe and keep on writing. As for me I will continue to be me and will write as White Orchids for commercial purposes. As easy as it seems handling two accounts can be complicated and trying to be two separate entities is hard especially when you do not wish to be revealed. But the next time a new hubber is reaching out to you, it would be proper etiquette if you reached back and gave them a helping hand.

So what was the secrecy and that 'experiment' about ? I don't get it. Nobody knows who you really are,so it's the same thing if you write under one name or another. It doesn't make any difference. If you're Joan Smith, or Patty Jones, what's the difference ? I don't see any.
The longer we've been on hubpages, the more education we get. In how the hub-community works:) Things can get hard, yet challenging:) Write On AEvans:)
7 hubs and 111 followers on another account... Interesting!!! You've Mentioned some great ideas on how to interact with new hubbers to build good relationship with them.
Nice to see you are still enjoying Hubs AE and you deff inspired me when I joined. I respect Hubpages as a website as I have learnt so much from it to go on and start my own websites but as for Hubpages now, the fun has gone. For me writing was always about fun, when the fun goes, the writer goes, enjoyed yer hub and good luck in yer future writing and thanks for supporting me as a newbie !
Well I think you are on a pretty good turf. Having well over 1500 fans in just two years and thousands of comments to support all your articles.
As for me, after enrolling with HubPages, it took several weeks to get my first comment and my first fan, and I have only 200 fans right now!!!
However, I have read over 2000 articles written by many hubbers and "hubresses," and have benefitted a great deal from them, and ironically I am not even a fan of many of the writers here whom I admire. :)
I think you are doing pretty well, and I think I am doing well too!
Cheers! :)
Thank you for your well written hub and especially on manners on hubs. Sometimes it does luck a bit but not very often. I am enjoying myself here on hub and didn't do too bad for a non-professional writer. I must praise hub for is that it is the easiest website to write on.
Aevans, I had no idea you had two accounts. I too write some on other sites but just don't have time to do much more than I am at the point. I learned very slowly when I first started and I don't remember much advice except from on kind soul. It is hard being new but then there is the time constraint as I can't keep up with my mail now. I'll have to check out your other site because quite honestly I don't know if I ever saw it. Very interesting hub.
voted up & useful! thanks AEvans, for an excellent hub. Being new myself, it's so gratifying to hear the encouraging remarks from one so experienced & talented. Please keep up the good work.
AEvns, thank you for being special for us.
Of course I read the hub ! I wouldn't have commented if not. I'm curious about all that secrecy about the 'experiment'. I really don't get why some hubbers had to be sworn to secrecy. That sounds so dramatic ! lol My point is, that you can come with whatever profile you want, and be good or evil, for in the end, nobody knows to whom they have to be grateful or not. What I see is that newbies are seldom treated badly. A lot of people are there to help them in the forums. And, of course, you are one of them. Cheers !
I would love other sites to write on, I want writing to become my sole source of income. I love your hubs, keep writing, all the rude mean people mean NOTHING, what they do says more about them than it ever did about anyone else. I have not time for them. You welcomed me here, and I am grateful for that, keep doing what you do.
A very interesting experiment. By contrast, I have been here 8 months, written 40 hubs, and have all of 28 followers and follow 31. I have never felt insulted either here or on any other site I write for, although part of the reason is probably that I avoid the forum threads most likely to be inhabited by trolls.
So I wonder: how did you get 111 followers with only 7 hubs? Besides the ego boost, how important is it to have lots of followers (considering that income results mostly from search engine traffic)? I try to comment on others' hubs and participate in forums with some regularity, but I have never made a priority of getting lots of followers.
RobertAllenSavage: there are lots of other sites. If this weren't a comment on someone else's hub, I could give my impressions of some. The nice thing is that you can rewrite all of your hubs for them and don't have to come up with anything entirely new!
How I wish I'd known of your other 'identity,' AE! But I've enjoyed your work as AE and you've been available to me as a newbie and I appreciate it.
Now that I'm not so new, I've found it fascinating and sometimes challenging to 'befriend' new hubbers-most often very rewarding.
People who come here are for the most part incredibly talented and I find it a joy to follow them!
Great idea and hub!
AEvans; thank you for a look at both the old and the new, you. I too find that as a person I have grown here on hub pages in many ways. Just when you think you know yourself, and just maybe others understand you even just a little, along comes a new wrinkle for you to have to deal with, building a new you.....Great Hub and thanks again.
Brother Dave.
This is good advice for both the newcomer and established hubber. This is nice community. :)
It is easy to be critical of others and I am especially aware of how it is to be a newbie. I make sure that I answer questions to the best of my ability or refer them onto someone more knowledgable. It isnt hard to share the love, is it?
Thanks for publishing this one! :)
AEvans very interesting hub. Since I have been on hubpages I have been treated very well and there have been people who have been very helpful. I try to help newcomers as much as possible because I know what it feels like. Thanks for writing this because it will make people stop and think. Cheers.
I joined HubPages, wrote about a half-dozen hubs, and then disappeared for six months. When I returned, I was more ready to embrace it. I have tried to become known through my writing and through commenting on the works of others--when I venture to the forums, I will sometimes speak but never make waves. I hope that some writers appreciate the time I spend reading and trying to offer comments relevant to their work--that is how I try to give back.
Mike
Thank you for being such an inspiration to me. You were the first to respond to my first article and I truly appreciated it. I have resolved to be much better at commenting on other's articles. I have learned so much from you! Wonderful article.
AEvans, I agree with you and always try to remember the golden rule. I have more than one user and a 100 score top ranking hubber visited one of my new hubs, for the first time and ripped it apart making remarks that were not valid or helpful, just mean! It's a shame and I feel some people do it just because the must feel threatened by others. Hummm I vow to be kind under both my user names and alway lift people up! Thanks for your very thoughtful Revealing The Other Side Of Me On HubPages, I enjoyed every word of it. Peace :)
Ive been on hubpages not to long now and I have to say you and many others on here have made me feel very welcome I plan on writing more Im working on my 3rd on so far I know that doesnt sound much, but you got to start somewhere. Oh and Ive got to give props to my sisters Ladyjane1, rose56 and whidbeywriter with out them I probably would not have started.:)
I tried something similar, opening a new Hubpages account and writing about some deeper, harsher parts of myself. It felt liberating to express those thoughts and feelings and see them displayed on the page, pulsating authenticity. I didn't get much of a following either and sometimes I even forget that those pieces are out there, like tiny astral chips on the edge of the universe. I feel like they are waiting for me to visit, to bring refreshment, to revisit my deeper self whenever I like. I thank Hubpages for allowing them to exist. :)
You know I started a list of people that I thought had a different personality but I could not keep up with it. I have read many of your hubs and will look at your other identity also but I do agree that people are treated differently in the forums. As for me, I enjoy the forums and the hubber community under my only id...thanks
I didn´t know you were writing under more than one account. It seems that you have put a lot of effort into your writing and that it payed off, especially because you seem satisfied with all that you have achieved here on Hubpages and elsewhere. Keep on with the great work! An encouraging hub!
Aevans-I thank you so much for writing this most important hub on this community of writers. I read another hub by nellieanna that said many of the same important things. We are here to support eachother in this journey. Some hubs are better than others but we are all in process. Thx so much
AEvans I keep saying each time I drop by that this is your best yet; however it seems that when I come by you have out dne yourself and without a doubt you have succeded in out doing yourself!!!
You are a wonderful caring person and compasionate in your writting!! I see why you are on the elite team!! Keep up the good work and the good writting!!!
YOUR AWESOME ALWAYS!!!!
Wonderfully written Aevans. I must say I have learnt a lot from you. You r a woman of immense strength and the personal problems that you have faced says alot abt u as a human being. U r special to me coz u are my first follower. I look up to your hubs and writings. It surely inspires me alot. Keep up the good work Aevans!!!
A delightful surprise you gave here, and some true words too. Now I will have to go meet White Orchids too. I'm just one of the 'little guys', but I do enjoy HubPages.
Thanks for sharing your heart!
You have always been good to me Juliana, and I love you girl. xox Charlie
wow. i remember when i first saw white orchids. you emailed me, saying she was your sister. then white orhids viciously attacked another "lyrical" poster and you emailed me again, saying "your sister" was "pulling out all the stops".
interesting.
i find it funny that people who are honest about their activities and feelings become pariahs and people who aren't become 'elite' hubbers.
well, thanks for the chuckles.
There is so much to be learned in your writing and I thank you for the mention. As Whiteorchids you first introduced yourself as AEvans sister and it was a funny comment which I appreciated so much; and from that date forward I have followed both. You are a gem!
AEvans you always seem to be the rhyme to reason, with class, talent, and extreme compassion. It was you who got me through 2 really tough times, but more importantly reminded me the importance of forgiveness. And oddly enough it was white orchids who I was able to share something else with that no one else knows.
Talk about experiments! It's hysterical, I have since closed all my accounts except for prey and I believe there was 9 at one point, only 4 active. My honest motive was to create a character I could write and be anonymous - that caused major upset, it was unbelievable, those wanting to 'out' me, and did so = but I understand now people don't want to find out after committing to a hubber for some time to find out they are someone else, maybe someone they don't like. I know so many multiple accounts and pay no mind to who they are = It for me boils down to the work and input into the community, and as writers I believe one of the most creative talents we possess is the ability to make your imagination come alive.
Thank you for this inspiring hub
Thank you for you
xo
Kimberly [and prey] LOL
and thanks to white orchids for all her support!
AEvans just curious what does a 'lyrical' poster mean that upset white orchids? Just don't understand the use of that word for someone or a hubber? In Cosette's comment, honestly I just need to know.
Thank you
Wow you are inspirational and thanks for sharing your story with us hubbers.
Great hub! All kind writers should be supported. I don't go to forums. I guess I haven't even researched enough of forums. My experience turned me off and I found it fruitless. So I don't see new hubbers come in I suppose. It's hard to imagine starting another hub. My head is so stuck in cycling and basic ethics. This is great insight. Thank you Ma'am!
AEvans, just a few things, thanks for clarifying I really didn't understand but my gosh no need for an apology. I have been a fan of white orchid for some time and will continue to be, but thank you, again you show your inability to be rude. Only an example as to what a hubber should be and we can inspire to
but.......
I cannot go on any longer without telling you, in kindness, you really should cut down or stop smoking. Every time I see you, you are smoking. You can do it, but I must admit I am jealous of that cigarette holder.
Good Luck LOL LOL LOL
xo
Kimberly
So glad I stumbled across your hub -- can't wait to read more. Thanks for the insights.
Brilliant :)
WOW! That is so inspiring!
You are right about being a new hubber - for weeks (or was it months?),I was lost. I didn't know what I was doing or what I have to do. I just wrote and bravely shared part of myself. It's good some hubbers most especially Coffeesnob and James Watkins reached out and stayed with me through those trying weeks. Everything changed when one of my hubs (on tea) became a hubnugget. Now the rest is history. I'm still here (one year after) and have gained more fans and even some close friends.
I love it here!
Thanks for sharing yourself and your other self (selves?)!
God bless!
Wow, I was out of the loop on this, I mean I knew White Orchids started as your sister... Anyway, this is great! Truly great. Took a long time to get to the bottom of the comments section, though!
I know it is very difficult to keep up with all those you follow on the hub pages and i dont find time to even be here much on hub pages ..and i have seen it needs much more time to follow others. but on +ive side i get to read all kind of hubs on all subjects and on subjects i didnt know there were. so i m liking being here
I am thinking of you all the time
Well maybe it's white orchids
I wanted you to know your on my mind all the time and no need to respond
I will add, whatever name you write under I still love you
*kiss*
You were one of my first fans, and i always read them. They are all wonderful!
I've tried other sites, but like HubPages the best.
I read your post in full and I have to say I am touched by your motherly tongue. It gets me thinking as to what I am really doing and trying to accomplish on Hub Pages. I think you really are the beacon of light on Hub Pages. Thank you for having welcomed me and for your availability.
I'm not on the fast lane at hub writing. I'm in no hurry writing my next, that's why. But I am, in joining forums and commenting back my commenters. It's real fun. You greatly influenced my desire to write again with your helpful personal ideas in this hub.
When it comes to following other hubbers, I believe we have to make a choice since for most of us HP is not a full time job, so reading and commenting becomes selective, according to personal interests, test and available time.
I have to agree somewhat - I have been slammed as a newcomer, and have taken some abuse in the forums, but have generally been very fortunate. I have always tried to be positive in my comments, and am usually received as honest and open(I thought) although it would seem now that at least one person does not think so: cosette - "i find it funny that people who are honest about their activities and feelings become pariahs and people who aren't become 'elite' hubbers."
Comments like that make me wonder why some need to strike out indiscriminately.
Thanks for a thoughtful and thought-provoking hub, AE
You are a inspiration to me. There are so many people here at hubpages willing to help and give their advise and I am thankful for them, including you. But there are also those who do seem to be just like you described in this hub. I am almost to scared to ask for advise. but knowing you are around really helps. thanks so much!
I have been going through some trying times in the last week relationship wise. Been sort of in shock. I'm having a difficult time focusing to write, so I decided to check out my fans and focus on reading their hubs and leaving comments. Not sure sometimes where these fans come from because I don't think everyone leaves fan mail. And when I saw your fan mail, I just assumed I must have responded, but obviously I never did. So I checked out one of your hubs tonight and it was THIS one about being mutually supportive here! So a tad embarrassed that I never acknowledged your fan mail from 1892, but I'm here this evening. Very interesting experiment. I like that kind of "stuff." Hubs has been a great discovery for me and a place I can write and publish often.
Thanks for an important reminder that we are a community. Whether or not one beieves in community, if you are writing here, you're in the community!
Thanks again for the hub and the support
Vern
AEvans, This was an interesting, helpful and encouraging read. You have brought out some great points! The Hub Pages can be a bit perplexing at times…
There are a diverse number of hubbers from all walks of life here. I think there are so many topics of discussion. I do not venture into the forums… perhaps that is something I should consider? I make it a point to answer and respond to as well as reach out to others and read their hubs as well… many who as you say never respond… All in all I realize that since I write about life and issues from a spiritual perspective the interests level definitely varies.
Thank you for being you and for giving us all a bit more insight!
You have given me some things to think about? Thank you for sharing In HIS Love, Peace & Blessings!
it is an on going learning experience for sure, thanks for sharing.
yea, it took me three months to get more than 10 followers, but i was following people like crazy right away!
Thanks for the revelations, AEvans. It's not at all heavens in HubPages...but what I like the most here is FRIENDSHIP.
Insightful Article!
Thank you AEvans!
There is so much to learn and your article is one of many that helps in that process. After 4 months I still feel new to this site and since, like many others, I work full time at one job and am developing another career, writing here is also an outlet for self expression that I cannot find elsewhere!
I will embrace new hubbers though, and old ones too! I would and do encourage anyone to follow their bliss!
Thanks for being whoever you are and being a part of this very unique community!
Now I'm definitely sharing this one! It was a pleasure to read your thoughts! Another great hub Ms Evans!
What a fascinating idea and a great way to get some perspective. I am a newbie. I am amazed at how wonderful the community is at hubpages. Very innovative.
What refreshing words here, AEvans. I love this. I must vote up and share because when I was new, I SO APPRECIATED the comments and follows from others. I still do. Voted up and across. :)
Great idea! It's always great to remember being new here. I haven't been here long but I can still remember the first few weeks were full of excitement but also a lot of confusion. This is a great hub for both new and experienced hubbers!
I have only been here for 4 months now, but I have found that for the most part, everyone here is kind and helpful. I have been very pleased with the way I have been treated here as a newbie. I hope that I have treated those who have come after me kindly as well. Wonderful idea and a wonderful hub! Voted up and awesome! :)
I enjoyed reading this one AEvans. It is a whole different experience as a new hubber. I know when I first started stumbling around being a new writer and a new hubber all at the same time it was scary, and hard, and exciting and so many other feelings all at the same time. I so appreciated JS Matthew when he reached out to me as a greeter. We are all busy at times, but someone took the time out of their busy-ness when we were new to help us, so that really is not a good excuse. Thanks for a great hub!
This is an excellent hub! I was fortunate to have nice people around me here when I was new. I had not realized how some people were being treated. Although I have been here over a year, I still can't say I am a good go to person for questions here. I can answer some but I was not real active for a while. Love it here, just a lot of projects had me quite busy!
I always try my best to help if anybody has a question or at least if I don't have an anwer, I can try to find it for them. We are not running a competition (well except for the contests), we should be working together!
I do need to start following more people here, I am planning on being more active starting now :)
very interesting hub, i too am still adjusting and learning all the rules on hubpages. i have read a lot of very interesting hubs and i am happy to be here. thanks for sharing !
voted up, useful and interesting !
AE, just when I thought you couldn't amaze me anymore than you already do. Two identities? I don't know how you manage to do it all. The experience you must have gained is priceless and to beable to pass that experience and information onto us newbies is remarkable.
My goal is to beable to eventually gain half the talent you have in writing and to beable to share it with my followers as well. However, I may have to stick to one identity as I have enough trouble with just myself! LOL
Voted way up! Lisa

Glad to hear you've tried two accounts. I've thought about it and yes I'm sure it is tough. I write on four different sites and have a hard time handling that even though I keep thinking about opening a second account here for different products and writing styles.
Hubpages is the one community where I participate the most. I feel I'm just getting the hang of writing and hopefully I'll continue to churn out material now that family life is settling down again . . . at least for the time being!
Thanks, AEvans, for all your encouragement.
