We Are American (A Poem)

Awaking this morning , drinking a cup of coffee and looking at all of the realtor signs in the front yards in our neighborhood. One realizes the American dream is lost, succumbed by corporate greed and outsourcing. In the beginning it was blamed on sub-prime borrowing but many of us know it was not all about bad loans. When America outsources a majority of its work, jobs are taken and the people on the other end are working for peanuts. Our Corporations become wealthier and the middle class disappears. Recently Americans began to fight back and if they continue on this journey, maybe America will be saved. How much longer can America stand before it crumbles and falls? As Americans we are fighters, movers and shakers. We can recover from this madness if we just say, "we will not take it anymore".

The poem reflects the journey that our Country has taken and when we stand as Americans side-by-side , hand-in-hand we will still be standing proud and free!

We Are American

We as Americans stand tall free and proud,

We travel and too often stand out in a Crowd.

No matter what happens we hold our heads high,

Weathering the storm and not batting an eye.

All around us now, we see sorrow and pain,

Banks foreclosing, with no sight of refrain

Millions of families still try to survive,

Others give up and commit suicide.

With some pantries bare and our food banks low,

Our Country is searching for new directions to go.

Non-profits claiming there is no more to give,

Others grow rich while the rest try to live

Many ask for donations to help the needy

But it appears some themselves have gotten greedy.

America was once strong built up on man’s dreams.

Before lawyers and politicians came along with their schemes

America was prosperous, we laughed and we played

Jobs could be had and most of our debts were paid

Marriage was special for the husband and wife

Children were nurtured and given directions for life

But It’s a dismal land that we live in today

Many want things and expect the government to pay

Children are lost in electronics and video games

While parents hold the schools and government to blame

Is there anger brewing in our neighbors and towns

Is there time an answer someone’s yet to have found

Our hearts are still strong as is our will to be free

As these politicians and lawyers may very soon see

They may have stripped us of dollars and dampened our will

But what built up this country is there and burning still

The task may seem daunting and a difficult test

But we Americans still have not given our best

So Pad all your pockets your health and retirement plans

Cause the money you’ve taken came from America’s hand

The well has run dry and we’ve no more to give

You leaches must now find a new place to live

Like the twin towers and the families of souls that were lost

She’ll rise from the ashes remembering well the cost

America will stand once again side by side

working together and sharing our country's pride.

Cardisa: I don't know where all of the words came from, but they kept coming. We are as Americans going to get through all of this. Your Country will too. :)

G-Ma Johnson: It will and can be. After I read the bottom the very last part I corrected it. We will G-Ma, we will. :)

Hi AEans it's good to see you're back and with a vengeance;) Great poem but ALL the passion in the world can't stop the greed! The saddest fact of life we all now face is the virus called greed. We all want it now and as you know I have been up and down and now I have one rule. 'Debt is not an option'. If I can't afford it I can't have it! And if I have to live on the poverty line 'which I have' so be it!!

Outsourcing feeds the greed as 'suppliers' bye it cheap and sell it quick; and of course give you the means to pay for it later. I enjoyed my time in America and still have 3 children there but recognise that if America is to be great again it MUST cut the fat and build its muscle.

China know a lot about dragons; but they got to know the dragon very well. It is indeed powerful and some may say invincible. But they know its weakness is its veracious apatite. They humbly feed it and it consumes everything they put in front of it until the dragon is to fat to fly. And so they continue until it can no longer move without their help. Unless the dragon wakes up soon and realises what's happening shakes off the fat and builds back the muscle the kill will be very easy.

It may be time to live on less; BYE AMERICAN! and shape up together with the team spirit I know you all have ;)

Zooloot.com: It is so good to see you. I agree with your comment and yes many of us should by AMERICAN but we fail. China does know a dragons weakness and yes we do have a hearty appetite. lolo! :D I believe we will begin to turn ourselves around, because all of us can.:)

bonnebarton: We do need to use our legs. Instead of crying about what is happening we need to stand up and say, " We are not going to take it anymore."

Just Ask Susan: We will! :)

My childhood friend just came back to Nepal after twelve years and said to me: I'm an American. I listened to him for couple of hours and tried to make a gist what's it like to be an American. Your poem explains better than my friend's babbling.

Simply and marvelously well put...every word and every sentence. This poem speaks exactly of the time and place we're in. Oh...for a future America...who still can hold on to the good things about her that made her great...for many more generations to come! Great Poem...Voted up...for sure!

The USA has lost her way, in god we trust is scorned, people will not pledge their "Allegiance to the flag". Where is the pride, our childeren have lost their moral compass, and our education system is adding fuel to the dragon's gluttony.

Great poem, thanks best wishes. Mike

Very powerful poem and the parts about greed and poverty are, sadly, all too true. But as you said toward the end of the poem we are a people of great spirit and fortitude and there is still hope for the future if we stand together. Voted up, useful, awesome and interesting.

America is 'sleeping with the enemy.' The enemy within, meaning Banks, AFL-CIO Unions, Armament dealers, Lobbists and our Congress, and so on...How can we overcome this wall or this greedy dragon that want a profit and a selfish share for themselves?

LORD

lord de cross: We can overcome by believing we will recover and standing side-by-side. :)
